Migration: Pick up where you left off or “start over”?

There are two essential ways to migrate a large amount of data “quickly”:

  • Migrate data until the data window closes. The next time the window opens, pick up where the migration left off.
  • Migrate data until the data window closes. The next time the window opens, start at the beginning again and check for changes.

There are pros and cons to both methods. It’s tempting to think the first method would be the fastest/best, since getting a “baseline” copy of all the data would be done first. The data set would then just have to go through some sync copies, and then you can change over to the new destination.

The Implications of Cloud on the Data Center

Globally, the cloud computing market is experiencing a sustained and consistent growth across industries. A Forbes article predicted that the worldwide cloud computing market will grow at a 36% compound annual growth rate (CAGR) through 2016, reaching a market size of $19.5 billion by 2016.

A Cisco Global Cloud Index report, too, has presented some very interesting statistics in this regard. The report states that by 2017 the amount of traffic crossing the Internet and IP WAN networks is projected to reach 1.4 zb per year. However, the amount of traffic crossing the Data Center is already 2.6 zb per year. What’s more, by 2017 the amount of traffic crossing the data center will be tripled to reach 7.7 zb per year. That’s a stunning 25% CAGR. Another very interesting piece of statistic from the same report is that by 2017 the data center alone would be handling 69% of the cloud traffic. These numbers clearly accentuate the fact that not only is the cloud computing market here to stay and evolving together with the data center, but it is also pushing the sales of products and services of data center vendors and service providers.

Debunking 5 Myths of Data Migration

Recently, I came across a very interesting infographic that exhibited ‘What happens on the Web in 60 seconds’. The Infographic showcased that in just a minute, we create thousands of terabytes of data which is an incredible feat in itself. Add enterprise data to it and the number shoots up exponentially. That’s the thing about data – it is only going to grow, and will continue to grow at breakneck speed.

Today, every organization from a start-up to a large enterprise is grappling with the challenges of data growth and the subsequent management of the storage of that data and its associated costs. With the continuous advent of new technologies and more efficient storage devices, companies are continuously looking to move data from old to new platforms, whether they be local or to the cloud.
