Fluid movement and management of file data between local and private cloud enterprise storage environments
Cloud computing technology is driving IT through a massive transformation. Every tech magazine, vendor, and IT organization seems to be relentlessly focused on cloud computing and how cloud computing can give enterprise IT organizations the flexibility they never had before to respond quickly to opportunities, deploy new applications, or scale up fast to meet growing customer demand. Cloud computing also promises to dramatically reduce expenses for hardware, maintenance, and IT staffing.
When they hear the term “cloud computing”, most people think of the public cloud, where applications and data are stored on shared servers at third party providers. Public clouds offer cost savings and flexibility, as well as fast deployment. However, in many enterprise environments both business and IT managers are uncomfortable with the idea of having important data stored off site and away from IT’s direct control. They are also concerned about the security of data stored on servers outside of the company firewall.
Because of concerns about public cloud environments, many enterprise IT organizations are turning instead to private clouds. Private clouds offer many of the same features and benefits of public cloud systems, but are set up and maintained behind the corporate firewall and remain under the control of the IT department. The private cloud model provides much of the efficiency and agility of cloud computing along with the increased control and customization achieved through dedicated private resources. The private cloud provides far more dynamic storage and IT resources, available on demand. However, data is stored as reliably and securely as in a traditional data center.
The Data Dynamics StorageX platform helps storage administrators better manage their file data in private cloud environments. StorageX private cloud file data management capabilities include:
- Single solution for viewing and managing both Network Attached Storage (NAS) and data stored in private clouds – StorageX provides a single storage infrastructure management platform for viewing file data stored on heterogeneous, CIFS- and NFS-based file systems located in both local and private cloud environments.
- Project-based file data consolidation and migration into lower-cost private cloud storage – StorageX Migration policies and project-based approach to migrations allow storage administrators to seamlessly migrate and consolidate file data from multiple heterogeneous file servers located across the enterprise onto lower-cost private cloud storage.
- Automatically classify and migrate files to the most appropriate storage tier – StorageX Archival Migration policies help storage professionals standardize storage tiering. Storage administrators can tier older file data to less-expensive private cloud storage within an enterprise data center while preserving access by users and applications.
- Integrate local and private cloud storage in a way that is transparent to users – StorageX provides a logical, intuitive view of storage to business users. Business users are not forced to understand underlying storage infrastructures in order to access their data, and users are insulated from having to understand the complexity of the underlying NAS and private cloud storage environment.
Industry estimate are that 80% of file data is no longer active after just 30 days. StorageX helps you automatically move inactive files to less-expensive secondary private cloud storage and reduce your storage costs.
